How to make Clay at home...

There are four ways I got from web to make Clay at home (Cold Porcelien ).

NB : This is not Polymer Clay

Method 1

  1. Use this recipe for a homemade version of polymer clay. This clay behaves in much the same way as commercial polymer clay but it might shrink more. It can shrink up to 30% by weight, not in size. Be aware of this when working on projects. You may want to build your project a bit bigger so that when it shrinks it will be the correct size.
  2. Pour ¾ cup of glue and 1 cup cornstarch into the non-stick pot. The pot should be either sitting on the counter during this step or if it is perched on the stove, make sure the flame is not on. Stir well until fully combined. PVA wood glue works best for this recipe although the normal white children’s glue will work well also. The children’s glue may result in clay that is a bit weaker than clay made with wood glue.
  3. Add 2 tablespoons of mineral oil and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice to the glue and cornstarch mixture. Stir well until completely blended. If you cannot find pure mineral oil then you can use petroleum oil (not jelly) or baby oil as a substitute. If you want, you can add food coloring or acrylic paint to the mixture at this point to color it. Be careful not to add too much paint or else you could change the texture. If you want vibrant colors then you should simply paint your creation once it is made.
  4. Transfer the pot to the stove. Simmer over low heat/flame. As you heat up the stove, stir constantly to keep the liquid ingredients moving. Don't let the mixture sit still, as this will compromise the integrity of the clay’s texture.
  5. Continue stirring the mixture until it resembles mashed potatoes. Once it turns to the mashed potato consistency, it’s time to remove from the heat/flame and place onto a cool/flat surface. Consider placing a hot pad or towel on the counter to protect your counter tops.
  6. Add a small squirt of mineral oil to the mushy clay. The oil will coat and grease your hands as you knead it so that it does not stick to your hands.
  7. Transfer the clay to the counter top to work and knead. You should do this while it is as hot as possible, as long as your hands can handle the temperature. You can also use either rubber or work gloves to protect your hands.
  8. Knead the dough until it's smooth. The consistency should appear like well-worked pizza dough and be completely blended together. Roll into a ball when finished.
  9. Store the finished clay in a re-sealable freezer bag that can be kept in the refrigerator. To keep clay fresh and avoid having it harden, remove as much air as possible before sealing the bag and storing it. If the clay is still warm, place in the bag but leave a small amount of the bag open. Once it has cooled completely, then you can seal and store it.
  10. Use your dough to create something. Now that you have made your dough, you can use it to create anything you choose. When working with the dough it helps to put a little hand cream on your hands to allow you to smooth the clay easily. Allow your creation to dry for at least 24 hours, or more if it is not yet dry. Paint with your choice of paint. Tempura paint works well but other types will work as well. You should paint even those areas that you want to remain white because it can start to look translucent if you do not.
Method 2:

  1. Use this recipe for homemade polymer clay for a version that does not crack. This recipe has a higher ratio of glue, which makes it much stickier but also prevents cracks. This recipe also dries much faster, taking only about 30 minutes. However, after making the recipe you will have to wait at least one night and preferably a week until you can use the dough. This makes it less sticky.
  2. Wear old clothes or an apron. This will keep your clothes clean and tidy during the process.
  3. Mix the water and glue in a non-stick pot and boil for two minutes. Mix ½ cup water with 2 cups pva (wood) glue in a non-stick pot. Boil them for two minutes while stirring constantly and then remove from the heat. You can use any white children’s glue but wood glue works best for this recipe because it is stronger.

  4. Mix the cornflour with ¼ cup of water in a mixing bowl and pour into the blend. Put the cornflour and water in a bowl and pour into the pot of boiling glue and water. Mix the ingredients well. Cover the dough with plastic while it is cooling. If using food coloring, add one to two drops and adjust as needed. Otherwise you can paint the clay after drying.
  5. Sprinkle cornflour on a suitable work surface. Remove the dough and knead well. Continue kneading and adding extra cornstarch until the dough becomes less sticky.
  6. Store in an airtight bag to prevent drying out. Put the dough in an airtight bag to prevent it from drying out while you wait until making use of it.
Method 3:

  1. Use this method for a traditional-style recipe from Latin America. This recipe is very popular in Latin America and makes useful clay. Many recipes call for 10% formaldehyde or formalin but this has been replaced with white vinegar in this recipe for a safer, non-toxic version.
  2. Mix the cornstarch, water and glue into a Teflon-coated pot. First mix 1 cup cornstarch with ½ cup water in a Teflon-coated pot over low heat until it is completely dissolved. Once the cornstarch has dissolved, add and mix in the 1 cup glue.
  3. Add the glycerin, cold cream and vinegar to the pot and mix. Add 1.5 tablespoons of glycerin, 1.5 tablespoons cold cream with lanolin and 1.5 tablespoons white vinegar to the pot. Continue cooking on low heat while stirring constantly until a dough forms and begins to come away from the sides of the pot. Be very careful not to overcook or else the dough will harden. Glycerin is a common baking ingredient that you should be able to find in the baking section of the supermarket. Find cold cream with lanolin in the cosmetics section of the store.
  4. Knead the dough with lotion on your hands. Allow the dough to cool with a damp cloth used as covering. Once you can handle the dough knead it into a smooth clay consistency. It is ready to be molded however you wish. Allow your creation to dry for at least three days in the air.Oil paints and acrylics can be used to paint your creation once you have allowed it to dry.
  5. Store in plastic wrap. Store in plastic wrap and keep in a cool, dark place.
Method  4:

  1. Use this recipe for very strong clay. This recipe involves additional ingredients but it results in very strong clay that can be dropped from one meter high and not break.
  2. Combine all the ingredients except the cornstarch in a non-stick pan over low heat. Mix 1 cup PVA glue, ½ tablespoon stearin (stearic acid), 1 ½ tablespoon glycerin, 1 ½ tablespoon Vaseline and ½ tablespoon citric acid in a non-stick pot over low heat. Mix completely. Use the lowest heat possible to heat up the pot.
  3. Add the cornstarch little by little and keep stirring. Add the ½ cup cornstarch little by little into the mixture, stirring the whole time. Adding the cornstarch little by little prevents lumps from forming. Keep mixing the clay until you can lift the clay up from the pan. It will get stickier and stickier and then heavier and very hard to stir but you must continue until you can lift it out of the pan.
  4. Knead the clay for about 20 minutes. Place the clay on a table on top of non-stick paper (baking paper). It should be hot, a little sticky and a little lumpy. Knead the clay for about 20 minutes until all the lumps disappear and the clay becomes smooth and no longer sticky. Allow the clay to cool down for a bit if it is still hot when you finish kneading.
  5. Store the clay in a sealed plastic bag. Store the clay in sealed plastic bags to prevent it from hardening before use. Make sure you press all the air out of the bag before sealing. Use the clay to make whatever you prefer and paint using acrylic paints.
Finally it should look like this !

It needs not be baked... will get harden itself in contact with air. Try it for your initial creative experiments.

What is Polymer clay

What 'wiki' says:
Polymer clay is a type of hardenable modeling clay based on the polymer polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It typically contains no clay minerals, but like mineral clay a liquid is added to dry particles until it achieves gel-like working properties, and similarly, the part is put into an oven to harden, hence its colloquial designation as clay.Polymer clay is generally used for making arts and craft items, and is also used in commercial applications to make decorative parts. Art made from polymer clay can now be found in major museums.

History

Bakelite, an early plastic, was popular with designers and was an early form of polymer clay, but the phenol base of uncured Bakelite was flammable and was eventually discontinued. Polymer clays were first formulated as a possible replacement for Bakelite. One of these formulations was brought to the attention of German doll maker Käthe Kruse in 1939. While it was not suitable for use in her factory, Kruse gave some to her daughter Sophie, who was known in the family as "Fifi," who successfully used it as modeling clay. The formulation was later sold to Eberhardt Faber and marketed under the name "FIMO" (FIfi's MOdeling compound).

Composition

Polymer clays contain a basis of PVC resin and a liquid plasticizer, making it a plastisol. Polymer clay plastisol is also categorized as a plastigel because of its rheological properties. It is a high yield thixotropic material; when a sufficient force is applied the material yields, flows like a viscous liquid until that force is removed, whereupon it returns to being a solid. This plasticity is what makes it useful as modeling clay as opposed to putty or paste. Plastigels retain their shape even when heat is applied, which is why polymer clay does not melt or droop when oven cured. Various gelling agents are added to give it this property such as aminated bentonite, metallic soaps, or fumed silica.

The base resin can be modified in various ways. Mineral oil, lecithin, and odorless mineral spirits can be added to reduce its viscosity or alter its working properties. Small amounts of zinc oxide, kaolin, or other fillers are sometimes added to increase opacity, elastic modulus, or compression strength. Polymer clay is available in many colors, which can be mixed to create a wide range of colors or gradient blends. Special-effect colors and composites include translucent, fluorescent, phosphorescent, and faux "pearls," "metallics," and "stone."

Use

Polymer clay remains workable until cured generally from between 265 °F (129 °C) to 275 °F (135 °C) for 15 minutes per 1⁄4 inch (6.4 mm) of thickness. This temperature is significantly less than for mineral clays and can be achieved using a home oven. The clay does not shrink when cured. Brands of polymer clay include Fimo, Sculpey, Premo, Cernit, Formello, Modello,Du-Kit and Kato Polyclay.
A home pasta-making machine is a popular multi-purpose tool for polymer clay artists. It is used to create sheets of uniform thickness, to mix colors or created variegated sheets, and to condition (soften) the clay.Polymer clay generally needs to be conditioned prior to use. This involves kneading the clay by hand, passing it between two rollers, or using a low-shear mixer to break up any resin particle adhesions. Once conditioned, the clay will remain pliable until the particles eventually re-adhere.

Health and Safety

Polymer clay safety is the subject of concern specifically the long-term effects of exposure to certain phthalate plasticizers that have been classified as endocrine disruptors. It should not contain more than 0.1% of any of the six phthalates restricted or banned by the safety regulatory boards. These six phthalates are: DEHP (Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate), DBP (Dibutyl phthalate), BBP (Benzyl butyl phthalate), DINP (Di-isononyl phthalate), DIDP (Di-isodecyl phthalate), and DnOP (Di-n-octyl phthalate. If the instructions on the package are followed (i.e. low temperatures and brief baking times) one will not burn the clay. If the clay does burn because of a mistake or if the oven malfunctions, a small amount of hydrogen chloride gas could be released, which may cause odor and some eye or nose irritation. The amount of hydrogen chloride gas released from the clay would cause a health problem. Due to the testing requirements and regulations, clay products that would be used to hold or serve food or beverages are not recommended or intended for these applications. All polymer clay products are NOT labeled as “food safe”. Plasticizers remain in the cured product and can leach out, making it a potential health hazard for both the modeler and end user. Restrictions on use of certain phthalates took effect in 2009 in both the European Union and United States. Not all phthalates pose a health hazard and some are approved for medical applications.

How to use Color Wheel...

Everyone must be thinking how color wheel has got much importance in the jewelry making. Its needed to make your desired color combinations. Check the below picture...

https://www.facebook.com/Projjwaljewellery

An essential tool for bead and jewelry designers everywhere, the color wheel is constructed to help you see the relationships between different hues.

The bases are three primary colors: red, blue and yellow. These are then combined to make the three secondary colors: orange, green, and purple. Finally, the remaining six colors on the wheel are known as tertiary colors and are mixes of the secondary colors, including such hues as red-orange and blue-green.

Wherever there’s light, there’s color. White light contains all visible colors, which form an infinite spectrum that appears in the red-to-violent sequence, like the rainbow. The colour wheel represents this infinite spectrum with 12 basic hues.

Constructed in an orderly progression, the color wheel is the range of visible light—represented by the 12 basic hues—formed into circle. It enables the user to visualize the sequence of color balance and harmony. The 12 basic hues are: Red, Red Orange, Orange, Yellow Orange, Yellow, Yellow Green, Green, Blue Green, Blue, Blue Violet, Violet, Red Violet.

Color Value

Each hue is at a level of full saturation, or brightness. There is no black or white added. When the relative amount of white or black is added to a hue, the color has lightness and darkness, called value. To show value, the color wheel has more rings: two outer for dark shades and two inner for light tints.
The Color Wheel is a tool for understanding which colors go with what, helping you find the right ones for your design. It teaches color relationships by organizing colors in a circle so you can visualize how they relate to each other.
Being able to use colors consciously and harmoniously can help you create spectacular results.

Combining Colors

Color combination is really the most important part of color theory and designing with colors, and also the hardest-- It always comes down to your personal judgement and how you look at colors. There are, however, some guidelines that can be used to make a color combination that is interesting and pleasing to the eye.

No color stands alone. A color is always seen in the context of other colors. In fact, the effect of a color is determined by the light reflected from it, the colors that surround it; or the perspective of the person looking at it.

No one color is “good” or “bad”. Rather, it’s one part of a composition that as a whole is pleasing or not.

How you mix and match colors in your design is completely up to your personal tastes, which can be influenced by current trends, nature, or other factors! Color design is exciting, experiment with new color combinations to see how you like the look. The color wheel is designed so that virtually any colors you pick from it will look good together. Over the years, many variations of the basic design have been made, but the most common version is a wheel of 12 colors based on the RYB (or artistic) color model.

Great color combinations don't just happen by accident - color theory, the science behind design - can be easily learned. If you find yourself making only jewelry in a single color scheme, pick up an inexpensive colour wheel (found at most art or hobby stores) and experiment with different combinations!

Traditionally, there are a number of color combinations that are considered especially pleasing. These are called color harmonies or color schemes and they consist of two or more colors with a fixed relation in the color wheel.

Color Schemes

Color schemes are created using symmetrical shapes around the wheel, they make combinations that are balanced and harmonious. As the shapes rotate, the combinations change, but the spacing of the colors in each combination does not. It is the symmetrical spacing that consistently ensures a harmonious combination.

There are 15 different color schemes with which to combine different colors:
  1. Monochromatic colors are all the hues (tints, tones and shades) of a single color.
    http://www.pinterest.com/maneeshasanoj/venera-collections/
  2. Analogous color scheme uses three to five colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel.
  3. Complementary color scheme is made of two colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel

  4. Analogous-Complementary color scheme utilizes related hues lying adjacent on the color wheel with a hue directly opposite to these.
  5. Dual Complementary color scheme is made of two colors side by side and their two complementary colors opposite them on the color wheel.
  6. Near Complementary color scheme is combining your starting color with the color to the right or left of its Complement will produce more interesting two-color combination.
  7. Split Complementary color scheme uses a color plus the two colors adjacent to its complementary color.
  8. Triadic color scheme uses three colors that are evenly spaced around the color wheel.
  9. Modified triads are created by choosing three colors on the wheel, each with only one space separating them instead of the two spaces used to create complementary triads.
  10. Complementary Triads are formed by combining any two complements with one of the two available colors midway between them on the wheel.
  11. Rectangle Tetrads: The rectangle or tetradic color scheme uses four colors arranged into two complementary pairs forming a rectangle.
  12. Square Tetrads: The square color scheme is similar to the rectangle, but with all four colors spaced evenly around the color circle.
  13. Mulit-color (up to 12 colors): Use matching values from each color around the wheel.
  14. Neutral - shade of browns and tans ie, a color is neutralized by mixing with its complement.
  15. Achromatic - No color, just shades of gray, black and white (grayscale)

Selling your jewellery

Sales, Sales n Sales !!!

Once you completed the all process of making n assembling a piece of art last comes to market and make sales. Its is the difficult part for beginners since they are new the number of people approach  will be zero or less. Whole responsibility to build your clients depends up to you only.
Many ways,to announce about these unique pieces of you in order to make aware in public.

Contract with owners of the women store

Almost no craftsman wants to sell all their artworks personally. So its good  to go for a contract with different stores in the city. You should only offer the owners of clothes and women's fashion stores more decorations for their mannequins. You will provide more material for their stocks. Above all, you will provide irrefutable piece for any woman! At the end of it all, what you have to do is receive the money from sales!
Keep in mind that:
• Never appear in stores with their jewelry in hand, without an appointment. Please contact the owner or manager to a meeting, then offer this profitable business. Many stores usually schedule specific times and on specific days to meet their suppliers. If you happen to be in a store on a slow day, so it's okay for you to introduce yourself and leave a card, but do not expect more than that. Be prudent and appropriate (Of course, that will not hurt to have samples of your jewelry in your car in case you have the immediate opportunity to do business!)
• Choose shops linked to women's fashion to offer this business. You will not want to go into a store that sells sports clothes to offer them.
• Wear clothes that give you a professional look and wear their jewelry in time to get in touch with the owner of a store.
• Do not be surprised if you are interrupted numerous times during his meeting with the store owner. Be prepared to see the owner taking care of other issues, such as phone calls, employees, customers, etc.
• Know what you want to say before contacting the owner of any store. Prepare a speech that should be spoken of friendly and natural way. Also be careful not to stray from the topic and not waste time of your future "partner" with extras and even irrelevant issues.
• Always keep receipts, pen and calculator along with their jewelry. Make sure you have everything you need before you pack up and leave for your hunting business.
• Invest in material that will carry and show their work. Bags, briefcases, cases ... Be creative and organized.
• Do not overlook the importance of "follow-up." If any dealer says he has no interest at the moment, but that may be interested in a few days, weeks or even months, Write it on your calendar and contact him again.
• Have a deposit contract that is simple and effective. You'll find many available virtually. If possible, to be even more professional, hire a lawyer to prepare a perfect contract for you and your business. This is a very worthwhile investment.
• If you close a consignment business, continue occasionally to make contact with the owner. Send a thank you note after the closing of the  contract and, where deemed appropriate, send a sample of a new work to see if matters to the store owner. Your goal is to build a relationship with those merchants that will take your business to a higher level.
• No matter what type of jewelry you will make. If they follow a standard of excellence, many shops will want to air your parts. What do you need to have is the foot on the ground to understand what sells and what does not sell. You also need to have confidence in yourself, have confidence in their work, and have a plan! After reading these points, I believe you have been helped to have started your plan.

You separate a number of pieces for a particular store. Determine the price of each units and also establish a selling price to the store. On the receipt there will also be an exchange of unsold lots. Even if they have left over pieces of the lot, do not let them mingle with other lots. Create a third batch to fit them again instead of mixing them.
Arrange in different lot for different stores.Create a description of each lot if you are selling to more than one shop to help you and the owner of the store. Also have a balance sheet of all that you do for your own organization.
Take them to their selling points within and beautiful bags and go dressed in our own jewelry.
Now  ziploc type bags you can find in markets and even jewelry stores. They can be opened several times and leave them packed in.

Other methods

But if you think sales, eye-to-eye, is something you can do, then great! If you want to sell your jewelry at various fairs and exhibitions conducted elsewhere, what I have to say is that these forms are also very valid. Either you can opt your own exhibitions at shopping malls with prior permission n agreement from that authority where you can get a huge reach as lot of people comes , goes, enquires n purchases. Just avoid diversify much. Remember that you need discipline and need to focus on what is most profitable and promising. See the cost-benefit of each plan and selling design.

Mouth publicity is a valid tool. You should wear yourself when you attend a party or function. Let people see these unique pieces. you gift it to your friends, relatives, colleagues on their birth day, wedding anniversary like functions. Ultimately don't miss any chance to tell public that I'm making some beautiful jewelry with hands.
https://www.facebook.com/Projjwaljewellery
Another means are online use face book, whatsapp, +google, twitter, linked in all such social networking sites will play a worthy role for marketting your goods. The reach we get will be beyond our imagination. They are free of cost too. Only thing you should join various groups related and share it regularly with fresh pieces.

Your time should be well worked as investing in improving and creating new parts, as tempting women to buy .

                              .......Good sales......

There are several different brands. You may wish to purchase more than one brand to see which one you like best. Some are softer than others.

Jewellery making findings
Choose some jewelry making accessories. You will need to plan what type of jewelry you will make. For earrings, you will need to purchase oven-proof earring studs. For a necklace, you will need to purchase an oven-proof band holder and a necklace band. For a bracelet, you will need to purchase a strong string, such as soft flex, for stringing beads. You can find a wide variety of jewelry making tools at a craft store.

Sculpt your jewelry pieces. Using your hands, you can sculpt pendants and figurines. You can sculpt a wide variety of beads. Mix and blend colors. Be creative. If you need ideas, try looking online.

Make holes in any jewelry pieces before baking. Even you can poke holes with a hand drill after
Make holes for beading
baking. A good way to make holes in beads is to stick a pin through the middle almost to the other side. Then, push the pin through from the other end to meet the place you stopped before. This keeps from making a rough spot where the pin comes out. You can also try baking beads on a skewer.

Add any metal accessory pieces to your sculpted items before baking. There are some accessories that need to be baked into the piece. Be sure anything you put in the oven is oven-proof.

Place your sculpted items on a covered cookie sheet. Cover the cookie sheet first with foil or mat board to protect the back of the jewelry pieces.
Bake the polymer clay items according to the package directions. Most clays are baked at 275 degrees F (135 degrees C) for 20 to 25 minutes. The bigger the items, the better give more time to cure. Allow sculpted items to cool. You can lightly sand with extra fine paper if needed. You can either paint the baked clay with acrylic paints. But I would not prefer it personally.
