Polymer Clay Appliqué/ Embroidery Pendant

A striking handmade clay dollar pendant in rich red hues, elevated with delicate clay appliqué detailing that adds depth and texture to its surface. Suspended on a sleek rat tail cord, the piece embraces a clean monochrome aesthetic—simple yet bold. Its minimal design highlights craftsmanship while making a refined statement, perfect for everyday elegance or subtle styling.

Here’s a clear, step-by-step tutorial for your red clay pendant with appliqué on a rat tail cord:

Materials

  • Polymer clay (red +black small amount for appliqué details)
  • Blade / needle tool
  • Toothpick
  • Rat tail cord
  • Oven (for baking)
  • Sandpaper / varnish (optional)

Step 1: Create the Base

Condition your red clay well until soft and smooth. Roll it into an even slab (about 3–4 mm thick).
Cut a round “dollar” shape using a cutter or bottle cap.

Step 2: Add Appliqué Design

Roll tiny pieces of red clay mixed with tiny little black clay into thin coils or small shapes (leaves, vines, motifs).
Gently place them on the base and press lightly to secure—this creates the raised appliqué effect.
Use a needle tool to refine edges and add fine details.

Step 3: Make the Hole ( channel for Cord )

I used to take small ball of clay .Use a toothpick or skewer to create a hole through the ball for the cord. Glue the ball on top of pendant with Bake & Bond. Keep it clean and centered.

Step 4: Bake

Place on a tile or parchment and bake at 275°F (130°C) for 45–60 minutes (based on thickness).
Let it cool completely before handling.

Step 5: Finishing (Optional)

Lightly sand edges for a smooth finish.
Apply varnish if you want a slight sheen, or keep it matte for a natural look.

Step 6: Assemble

Thread the pendant onto a rat tail cord.
Adjust length and tie simple knots—no clasp needed for a minimal lariat-style finish.

Style Tip

Keep it monochrome red for a bold, elegant look, or lightly antique the appliqué with a darker shade for depth.

👁️ Peacock “Eye” Detail (Optional Center Fringe)

On the longest (center) fringe:

  • Add sequence near top:

This creates a subtle “eye” highlight.

✨ Design Notes

  • Bugle beads create sleek feather “spines”
  • Gold beads add contrast + richness
  • Keep tension even for clean drape
  • You can curve slightly by tightening outer fringes

🎯 Result

A tapered, flowing fringe that resembles a stylized peacock feather with elegant black-and-gold contrast—lightweight, dramatic, and perfect for statement earrings.
