Amethyst & Cultured Pearl Necklace

Handmade Amethyst Chip & Freshwater Pearl Long Necklace | DIY Gemstone Jewelry

In this video, I’m sharing a handmade long necklace featuring natural amethyst gemstone chips paired with beautiful freshwater pearls. The rich shades of purple, from pale lavender to deep violet, create a lovely contrast with the soft, luminous white of the pearls.

I purchased the materials for this project from Fire Mountain Gems and Beads and assembled the necklace by hand, connecting the irregular amethyst chips with metal links to create a flowing, organic design. The elongated metal connectors and freshwater pearl drops add movement, texture, and an elegant finishing touch.

The combination of natural gemstone chips, lustrous pearls, and antique-tone metal findings gives this necklace a distinctive handcrafted look. It can be styled with traditional Indian outfits, dresses, or simple casual wear.

Materials used

  • Natural amethyst gemstone chips
  • Freshwater pearls
  • Jewelry wire or  eyepins and ball pins, as required by the design
  • Daisy Spacers
  • Metal jump rings and connecting links
  • Long metal connector components
  • Jewelry clasp and findings
  • Jewelry pliers and wire cutters

Materials sourced from Fire Mountain Gems and Beads.

Tutorial overview

  1. Prepare the materials: Sort the amethyst chips by size and color, and select the freshwater pearls for the drops.
  2. Create the gemstone links: Use headpins or wire to make secure loops around individual amethyst chips.
  3. Connect the chips: Join the linked gemstone chips using jump rings, creating a flexible, flowing chain.
  4. Add the pearl drops: Attach freshwater pearls to the long metal connectors to create delicate dangles.
  5. Assemble the necklace: Connect the sections, arranging the purple chips and pearl drops for a balanced design.
  6. Finish the necklace: Attach the clasp and inspect all loops and connections to ensure the necklace is secure.

This is a project that can be adapted to your preferred necklace length, metal finish, and arrangement of gemstone chips.

About amethyst

Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz, with colors ranging from pale lilac to deep violet. Its color comes primarily from trace iron and natural irradiation within the crystal.

In traditional crystal and gemstone lore, amethyst is associated with calmness, clarity, balance, and spiritual awareness. These are traditional beliefs rather than scientifically established healing effects.

Birthstone: Amethyst is the traditional birthstone for February. It is a meaningful choice for February birthdays and makes a thoughtful handmade gift.

About freshwater pearls

Freshwater pearls are formed inside freshwater mussels. Their soft sheen, natural luster, and subtle variations make each pearl distinctive.

Pearls are traditionally associated with purity, wisdom, serenity, and elegance. They are also commonly connected with new beginnings and meaningful milestones.

Birthstone: Pearl is traditionally associated with June, alongside alexandrite and moonstone in modern birthstone lists.

The combination of February’s purple amethyst and June’s luminous pearl makes this necklace especially meaningful for birthdays, anniversaries, and personalized gifts.

Gemstone facts and care

  • Amethyst is February’s birthstone and is traditionally associated with the sixth wedding anniversary.

  • Pearl is one of June’s three modern birthstones, along with alexandrite and moonstone.

  • To care for your necklace, wipe the pearls gently with a soft, damp cloth after wearing. Avoid perfume, harsh cleaners, and prolonged exposure to heat; store the pearls separately to prevent scratches.
